Migraine

Migraine is a neurological disorder manifesting as recurrent bouts of severe headaches. A migraine is not an ordinary headache. It is a pain that will exclude from life and functioning; it is unpredictable.

Migraine symptoms

In the case of symptoms, a distinction must be made between the two types mentioned above, as follows:

- Migraine with aura (typical migraine) is a severe, throbbing headache. In this case, we are dealing with a headache that usually affects one side. The pain can last from several hours to several days. There may be additional symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, photophobia, acoustics, fatigue, hypersensitivity to external stimuli, and/or a feeling of reduced general well-being.

- Migraine with aura. The word aura includes the so-called pre-symptoms of migraine attacks, usually before the onset of a headache. This may consist of visual disturbances (e.g., scotoma, flickering lights), sensory disturbances, speech difficulties, or neurological disturbances.

Migraine treatment

Migraine treatment includes both relief of symptoms during migraine attacks (reliever treatment) and prevention to reduce the frequency and severity of attacks.
  • Painkillers: medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help relieve migraine pain. Some preparations also combine painkillers with antiemetics.
  • Migraine-specific medications: there are specialised migraine drugs, such as triptans, which can effectively reduce migraine pain as well as nausea and vomiting.
  • Behavioural therapy: behavioural therapies such as biofeedback, relaxation therapy, and stress management techniques can help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines.
  • Preventive pharmacotherapy: in some cases, e.g. frequent and persistent migraine attacks, a doctor may prescribe preventive treatment such as beta-blockers, anticonvulsants, antihypertensives, or antidepressants to decrease the frequency and severity of attacks.
  • Lifestyle modifications: avoiding migraine triggers such as stress, lack of sleep, certain foods, or chemicals can be helpful in preventing migraine attacks.
  • Botulinum toxin therapy is a minimally invasive and long-lasting solution for chronic migraine treatment. It helps reduce pain and decrease the number of migraine days.
  • Psychodietetics: supporting migraine treatment through diet involves eliminating foods that may trigger attacks. The process of elimination or reintroduction of products should be closely supervised by a specialist. Some patients may benefit from a low-histamine diet or the use of substances that facilitate histamine breakdown. Maintaining stable blood sugar levels by consuming low glycaemic index foods such as wholegrain products can help reduce migraines. Additionally, supplementation with magnesium, vitamin B2, and omega-3 fatty acids may support reducing the frequency and intensity of migraines. These are just some of the factors that a psychodietitian considers when designing a treatment plan.
  • Endocrinological treatment: migraine may occur in the perimenopausal period, in which case hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) can be considered.
  • Migraine therapy with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Modulating neuronal activity in pathways responsible for pain signal transmission, TMS helps reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks.
  • Migraine therapy with Peripheral Magnetic Nerve Stimulation (mPNS) Read more about how mPNS works in migraine therapy

Advanced Neuromodulation Programme for Migraine Pain

At Magwise Clinic, we also offer non-pharmacological migraine treatment based on neurostimulation, developed according to the latest clinical evidence and protocols inspired by the experience of MagVenture.

This method combines:

  • Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
  • Peripheral Magnetic Nerve Stimulation (mPNS)

This approach targets both central and peripheral mechanisms responsible for migraine development.

In migraine pain, TMS is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique primarily aimed at the motor cortex, using an FDA-approved protocol for chronic pain treatment. By modulating neuronal activity in pathways responsible for transmitting pain signals, TMS helps reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks.
Additionally, mPNS therapy is applied, based on gentle peripheral magnetic stimulation that produces therapeutic effects by mobilising areas around the shoulders, neck, and cervical spine. This helps to relax neuro-muscular tension, which plays a role in migraine development.

Clinical studies, including the work by Leahu et al. (2021), have shown that combining TMS and mPNS can significantly extend migraine-free periods and improve the overall quality of life for patients suffering from frequent migraines.

At Magwise Clinic, the neurostimulation programme is personalised, evidence-based, and designed to provide a safe, non-invasive, and drug-free migraine prophylaxis for those seeking an effective alternative or complement to pharmacotherapy.

Peripheral magnetic nerve stimulation is a comfortable method for migraine patients, which can reduce local muscular pain or tension. Symptom relief was achieved through stimulation of the myofascial trigger points of the trapezius muscles, which are considered part of the trigeminocervical complex.
