Migraine

Migraine is a neurological disorder manifesting as recurrent bouts of severe headaches. A migraine is not an ordinary headache. It is a pain that will exclude from life and functioning; it is unpredictable.

Migraine symptoms

In the case of symptoms, a distinction must be made between the two types mentioned above, as follows:

- Migraine with aura (typical migraine) is a severe, throbbing headache. In this case, we are dealing with a headache that usually affects one side. The pain can last from several hours to several days. There may be additional symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, photophobia, acoustics, fatigue, hypersensitivity to external stimuli, and/or a feeling of reduced general well-being.

- Migraine with aura. The word aura includes the so-called pre-symptoms of migraine attacks, usually before the onset of a headache. This may consist of visual disturbances (e.g., scotoma, flickering lights), sensory disturbances, speech difficulties, or neurological disturbances.

Migraine treatment

Migraine treatment includes both relief of symptoms during migraine attacks (reliever treatment) and prevention to reduce the frequency and severity of attacks.
  • Pain relievers: Medications like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help relieve migraine pain. Some preparations also contain a combination of analgesics and antiemetics.
  • Migraine medications: There are specific migraine medications, such as triptans, that can effectively relieve migraine pain and reduce nausea and vomiting.
  • Behavioral therapy: Behavioral therapy, such as biofeedback, relaxation therapy, and stress management techniques, can help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines.
  • Prophylactic drug therapy: In some cases, such as frequent and persistent migraine attacks, your doctor may prescribe preventive medication, such as beta-blockers, antiepileptic drugs, antihypertensive drugs, or antidepressants, to reduce the frequency and severity of attacks.
  • Lifestyle modifications: Avoiding migraine triggers such as stress, sleep deprivation, certain foods, and chemicals can help prevent migraine attacks.
